ALLIANCE − A children’s Halloween party will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Rodman Public Library’s Main Library, 215 E. Broadway St.

It is open to families with children of all ages and will include a craft, treats and games. Costumes are not mandatory, but they are encouraged. No registration is necessary. For more information, call the Children’s Department at 330-821-2665, ext. 223.

ALLIANCE - The University of Mount Union 2022-2023 Lecture Series continues at 7 p.m. Friday with the Wolf Lecture, which will feature writer and activist E. Ethelbert Miller.

Miller is the author of two memoirs and several books of poetry. He served as the editor of Poet Lore, the oldest poetry magazine published in the United States. Miller is host of the weekly WPFW morning radio show “On the Margin with E. Ethelbert Miller” and host and producer of “The Scholars” on UDC-TV.  

Actor John Andrew Morrison will present the Eckler Lecture at 7 p.m. Oct. 24. Morrison won a Lucille Lortel and an Obie Award for his work in the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “A Strange Loop.” He is a member of Musical Theater Factory in New York. Morrison will present “Connecting the dots backwards: Reflections on inner guidance, mentors, failures and triumphs in building an authentic acting career.”   

The Slater Lecture, to be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 28, features Paul Iversen, associate professor, and chair of classics at Case Western Reserve University. Iversen has worked with one of the world’s most foremost Greek epigraphers who invited him to work on the Packard Humanities Greek Epigraphy Project – a project to create a searchable database of all ancient Greek inscriptions. He will present “The Antikythera Mechanism and Greek Hellenistic Astronomy and Engineering.” 

All lectures are free and open to the public and will be in Brush Performance Hall, Giese Center for the Performing Arts.  

CANTON − The Canton Garden Center will hold its fall fundraiser, “Garden Gloves and Pearls,” on Oct. 22 at La Pizzaria Crystal Room, 3656 Dressler Road NW.

Doors open at 11 a.m., with a family-style lunch at noon. Celine Hallier will present the program “Sisterhood of the Traveling Plants.” There will be a gift basket raffle. Seating is limited.

CANTON − The Canton Area League of Women Voters will host a panel discussion on Issue 1 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Timken Commons, 521 Tuscarawas St. W. The entrance and parking are off Fourth Street NW. 

Panelists are Stark County Common Pleas Judge Kristen Farmer, Canton City Prosecutor Jason Reese, Stark County Public Defender Tammi Johnson and retired University of Akron law professor Dean Carro. Former Canton City Law Director Joe Martuccio will moderate. 

If passed by Ohio voters in the November general election, Issue 1 would modify the state constitution to “Require Ohio courts, when setting the amount of bail, to consider public safety, including the seriousness of the offense, as well as a person's criminal record, the likelihood a person will return to court.”

CANTON – To celebrate Adopt a Shelter Dog Month this month, the Stark County Sheriff’s Office and two area nonprofits, Pawsitive Ohio and the Friends of the Stark Pound, are partnering to make it easier to adopt a pet from the Stark County Dog Warden’s Office, 1801 Mahoning Road NE. 

Now through Oct. 31, adopt a dog for $49, more than a 50% discount on the traditional adoption fee. Additionally, adopters will receive a $25 gift card for pet supplies, and two 30-minute dog training sessions with a local trainer, Cosmic K9. The deal includes an Ohio dog license, vaccines, microchipping, spay/neuter and heartworm testing. 

You do not need to be a Stark County resident to adopt and take advantage of this special adoption event. 

If you are missing your dog, call the Stark County Dog Warden at 330-451-2343. Upon arrival at the Dog Warden, dogs are held for 72 hours for owner redemptions before they become available for adoption at the Mahoning Road facility. You can also view the dogs on hold and dogs available for adoption on petfinder.com. 

CANTON − The National First Ladies’ Library, in conjunction with Christ Presbyterian Church, will debut a new set of musical compositions inspired by U.S. first ladies at 7 p.m. Friday at Christ Presbyterian Church, 530 Tuscarawas St. W.

The performance, titled East Wing Songs, seeks to humanize the first ladies through song, sharing their stories, and memorializing their achievements and challenges. Ann Marie Daehn, a mezzo soprano, stage director, and associate professor at Missouri State, will perform the pieces with longtime collaborator Elizabeth Avery. The songs featured were composed by Leanna Kirchoff, who selected women that span time, age, political party, and approach to their role within the White House.

CANTON – Canton Ballet will present “Celebrate Dance!” at the Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The program, an annual performance featuring new works from classical to contemporary, is commissioned specifically for the individual talents of Canton Ballet’s dance artists. The performance will feature a diverse selection of dance genres.

CANTON – Guitarist Joe Satriani will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, as part of his Earth Tour.

Satriani's new studio album "The Elephants of Mars" was released in April. His studio and live recordings have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide to date.

DOVER − The Reeves Museum, 325 East Iron Ave., will host ghost tours Friday and Saturday.

Hear about strange occurrences in the house, as well as some unusual Victorian superstitions and funeral practices. The tours will begin at 7 p.m. and continue every half hour until 10 p.m. Guides will take visitors into 13 rooms of the mansion.

The cost is $13 per person. Special midnight tours are available for $25 per person. A T-shirt is included with the midnight tour. Call the museum office at 330-343-7040 to make reservations. 

HARTVILLE − Hartville Kitchen, 1015 Edison St. NW, will host the Greater Vision dinner concert from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

MASSILLON − Local historian Margy Vogt will talk about 60 important former Massillonians during a Massillon Cemetery walking tour at 2 p.m. Oct. 16. The walk meanders about a mile and a quarter along wooded lanes through the 176-year-old cemetery.   

Participants should meet at the cemetery entrance, 1827 S. Erie St. (south of the Oberlin Road exit of state Route 21). Cemetery parking is limited, but ample free parking is available on both sides of South Erie Street. Reservations are not necessary; the $10 fee may be paid at the beginning of the tour. 

The casual narration includes the history of the cemetery and the superintendent’s residence, as well as stories of people whose monuments represent the contributions they made to Massillon’s history and beyond.

MASSILLON − The Lions Lincoln Theatre, 156 Lincoln Way E, will present the Everly Brothers Experience from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 15.

PERRY TWP. − The Perry History Club's next meeting is at 6 p.m. Oct. 17 in the lower level of the Perry Police Community Room, 622 Genoa Ave SW. The speaker will be Richard Haldi on Rogers and Hammerstein.

The Perry History Club's all-you-can eat pancake and sausage breakfast will be 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Richville United Church of Christ, 6125 Richville Drive. Cost is $8 for adults and $3 for children 10 and younger.
