Determined. Dedicated. Committed to others through service. That’s UHD Gators!

GatorServe is a UHD tradition that brings together UHD students, staff, faculty, friends, families, and community partners to complete projects in service to our neighbors. We do this twice a year—in remembrance of 9/11, as part of the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, and to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.

The upcoming National Day of Service will be held 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022. Gators will volunteer in Houston’s Northline neighborhood at Farias Early Childhood Education Center, Durkee Elementary School, and Northline Park.

Sponsored by UHD’s Center for Community Engagement & Service Learning, Day of Service kicks off at Farias Early Childhood Center, 515 E. Rittenhouse St., Houston, TX 77076, with a Welcome Ceremony featuring Mariachi Los Caimanes performing the National Anthem and remarks from UHD President Loren J. Blanchard and District H City Council member Karla Cisneros.

“The faculty, staff, and students of UHD don’t just talk the talk; we walk the walk,“ stated President Blanchard. “Our vision is to be the inclusive university of choice for Houstonians seeking to contribute to the social, intellectual, and cultural lives of their communities. This event demonstrates our commitment to our neighboring communities as an Anchor Institution.”

At Northline Park, Houston Parks and Recreation Department will guide projects in the revitalization of the park. For the two elementary schools, Gators will help spruce up the gardens, and at Durkee Elementary, volunteers will clear and organize common areas within the school.

Volunteers will be provided T-shirts; tools, supplies, and instructions to complete the projects; and box lunches to go. Volunteers should come prepared to sweat and get dirty while completing projects. It’s not too late register online and show your Gator spirit to the community!
