Before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in late February, three hospitals in government-controlled areas of the country’s war-torn Donetsk region had facilities to care for premature babies. Now, there's just one. The Pokrovsk Perinatal Hospital's only remaining neonatologist lives there, half the time joined by her 3-year-old son. Doctors say the stress of war and rapidly worsening living conditions are leading to more frequent birth complications. When air-raid sirens sound, they remain at work since the newborns in the hospital’s above-ground incubation ward can't be disconnected from lifesaving machines. The doctors say the the journey west to a maternity hospital outside the war zone also remains too risky for the area's pregnant women.

A leading Palestinian rights campaigner says that Israel has tried to summon him for questioning as it presses ahead with a crackdown on Palestinian rights groups. The crackdown comes despite tough European and American pushback against Israel's claims that the targeted groups are linked with militants. Sunday's apparent attempt to order Shawan Jabarin to report to a military prison came in the wake of a widely criticized raid last week on six Palestinian civil society organizations. Nine European countries, using uncharacteristically blunt language, called the raid “not acceptable,” while the U.S. expressed concern. Jabarin says he rejected the order from Israel's Shin Bet security agency. The Shin Bet did not respond to requests for comment.

‘Reliable Sources’ host Brian Stelter insists he's still rooting for CNN, even as the network canceled the 30-year show on the media this week, and he's exiting. But he said CNN must still find a way to hold the media accountable, and that it was not partisan to stand up for decency, democracy and dialogue. He said it's not partisan to stand up to demagogues. CNN hasn't spoken publicly about why the show was ended, but it is actively looking for ways to reduce the hostility of conservative viewers. Stelter, a persistent critic of Fox News, was a frequent target of Republicans.

Indiana State University says three students have died in a single-vehicle accident. According to a release from the university’s athletics department, five people were in the vehicle when it crashed, including several football players. Police were working to identify the three who died. Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse said the crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in Riley, Indiana. The vehicle left the roadway and hit a tree. It was on fire when deputies arrived. Two passengers were able to be freed from the vehicle and were being treated for serious injuries, Plasse said. The driver and two other passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. Riley is about 10 miles from the university's Terre Haute campus.

Sam Bennett went two years without a stage win at a Grand Tour race. Now the Bora-Hansgrohe rider has won two in a row. Bennett prevailed in another sprint finish at the third stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Sunday. Bennett hadn’t won a Grand Tour stage since the 2020 Vuelta before ending his winless streak in Utrecht on Saturday. Edoardo Affini has taken the leader’s red jersey to keep his Jumbo-Visma team in position to help Primoz Roglic defend his title. Affini is the third consecutive rider from the Dutch team to grab the overall lead during the Vuelta’s start in the Netherlands. Sunday's stage was a 193-kilometer or 120-mile loop around Breda.

Lightning struck during a nighttime trail race up a Greek mountain, killing one runner and seriously injuring another. That's according to Greek police and the fire service. The two men were among 55 runners taking part in the Six Peaks race — a 35.7 kilometer (22.2-mile) run up 2,232-meter (7,323-foot) Mount Falakro. That is in northern Greece near the border with Bulgaria. The race had started at 7 p.m. Saturday in good weather, but heavy rain came in overnight. By the time the lightning struck at 4 a.m. Sunday, several runners had already finished. The fire service found a 55-year-old runner who was already dead. A 56-year-old runner was seriously injured and was airlifted to a hospital.

California has a first-in-the nation law and a $30 million training program both aimed at trying to help former inmate firefighters turn pro after they are released from prison. But an Associated Press review finds the twin efforts have barely made a dent even as wildfires rage across the West. The 4-year-old training program has earned jobs for just over 100 firefighters. And months of delays often limit former offenders trying to clear their criminal records under a groundbreaking law that took effect last year.

The practice by a Florida prosecutor, who was suspended from his job by Gov. Ron DeSantis, of not prosecuting suspended licenses, disorderly conduct and other low-level misdemeanors has been dropped by his successor. Susan Lopez who was appointed as state attorney for the Tampa area after DeSantis removed Andrew Warren from office told her staff last week that she is rescinding the practice. The Tampa Bay Times reports that local leaders and experts fear that the change will disproportionately affect people of color and the poor. Warren, a Democrat, was suspended earlier this month by DeSantis, a Republican seeking re-election in November.

The United Arab Emirates says it's planning to reinstate its ambassador to Iran for the first time in six years, as the Gulf Arab federation accelerates efforts to improve ties with the country it has long viewed as a regional threat. The Emirati Foreign Ministry made the announcement on Sunday. The move comes as the Gulf Arab sheikhdoms have advocated a detente with Tehran amid what has been described as final efforts to save Iran’s tattered nuclear deal with world powers. Last week, Kuwait also appointed a new ambassador to Tehran for the first time since 2016. Saudi Arabia has similarly worked to cool tensions with Iran in a series of Baghdad-mediated talks.

“Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” topped the charts in its first weekend in theaters, with $20.1 million in ticket sales according to studio estimates on Sunday. Universal's Idris Elba-led action flick “Beast,” meanwhile, settled for a second-place debut with $11.6 million.  Crunchyroll released “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” on 3,900 screens in North America, marking the widest-ever opening for an anime. The Toei Animation production was directed by Tetsuro Kodama, who had the support of “Dragon Ball” creator Akira Toriyama. “Bullet Train” placed third, followed by “Top Gun: Maverick” in fourth and “DC League of Super-Pets” in fifth place.

Montgomery is marking the 66th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott with a series of celebrations and events next week. Rosa Parks, an African-American woman, was arrested Dec. 1, 1955 after refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus in Montgomery. Her action helped ignite the yearlong boycott of the bus system by Black passengers and ushered in the civil rights movement. There will be free admission to the Rosa Parks Museum from Dec. 1 to Dec. 5. A full list of events can be found at www.mgmbusboycott.com.

A horror movie convention promoter says it is assisting authorities following charges against actor Gary Busey involving alleged sexual offenses at an event in New Jersey earlier this month. The 78-year-old actor was charged Friday with fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, attempted criminal sexual contact and harassment after the Aug. 12-14 Monster Mania Convention in Cherry Hill. Monster Mania Convention said in a Facebook post that after attendees complained, a “celebrity guest was removed from the convention and instructed not to return.” The company said it also encouraged the attendees to contact the police to file a report. A Busey representative hasn't returned a message seeking comment.

Major champion and golf course architect Tom Weiskopf has died of pancreatic cancer. His wife says Weiskopf died Saturday at their home in Big Sky, Montana. Weiskopf's contributions to golf go far beyond his 16 PGA Tour wins and his British Open title at Royal Troon in 1973. He was blunt and accurate when he worked as a TV analyst. And he was equally successful as a golf course architect. Weiskopf was diagnosed with cancer in December 2020. Laurie Weiskopf says he was still working on design projects in the week leading to his death. Tom Weiskopf was 79.

West Ham slumped to its third straight loss to open the Premier League season as goals from midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Leandro Trossard earned Brighton a 2-0 win. Mac Allister’s 22nd-minute penalty and Trossard’s breakaway goal in the 66th maintained Brighton’s unbeaten start to the season after a win at Manchester United and a draw with Newcastle. West Ham has now played Brighton 11 times in the Premier League and not won once. David Moyes’ team has not scored a goal in the league this season.

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham’s obligation to testify before a special grand jury that’s investigating whether then-President Donald Trump and his allies broke any laws as they sought to overturn his 2020 election loss in Georgia is temporarily on hold. A subpoena had instructed the South Carolina to appear before the special grand jury on Tuesday. U.S. District Judge Leigh Martin May on Monday denied Graham’s request to quash his subpoena and on Friday rejected his effort to put her decision on hold while he appealed. Graham’s lawyers appealed to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. A three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit on Sunday issued an order temporarily pausing May’s order declining to quash the subpoena.

A bad error by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy prompted a collapse by Chelsea in a 3-0 loss at Leeds featuring a first Premier League goal by American winger Brenden Aaronson. The late sending-off of center back Kalidou Koulibaly completed a miserable afternoon at a lively Elland Road for Chelsea which fell to a first loss of the season. For the first goal Aaronson applied pressure on Mendy after the Senegal international received a back pass in the 33rd minute. Mendy took a slightly heavy touch and tried to go around Aaronson, who dispossessed him and walked the ball into the net to make it 1-0. Rodrigo and Jack Harrison also scored.

Serbia’s president has called on NATO to “do their job” in Kosovo or he says Serbia will have to protect its minority in the breakaway province. The fiery televised address to his nation by President Aleksandar Vucic on Sunday followed the collapse of political talks between Serbian and Kosovo leaders this week mediated by the European Union in Brussels. Serbia, along with its allies Russia and China, has refused to recognize Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence. There are widespread fears that Russia could encourage its ally Serbia into an armed intervention in northern Kosovo that would further destabilize the Balkans and shift at least some world attention from Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Singapore announced it will decriminalize sex between men by repealing a colonial-era law while protecting the city-state's definition of marriage. During his speech Sunday at the annual National Day Rally, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he believed it is the “right thing to do now” as most Singaporeans will now accept it. He said the government will also amend the Constitution to ensure that there can be no constitutional challenge to allow same-sex marriage.

The polio viruses recently found in the sewer systems of Jerusalem, New York and London were mutated versions of viruses that first originated in vaccines meant to stamp out the paralytic disease. That is a surprising twist in the decades-long effort to eradicate polio. For years, global health officials have used an oral vaccine in an attempt to wipe out the disease in its last remaining strongholds in countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. In recent weeks, scientists have found evidence of polio spreading within Israel, the U.S. and Britain. Genetic analyses show that the viruses were linked to the oral vaccine itself.

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck southern Haiti a year ago, killing more than 2,200 people. More than 130,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. And thousands of impoverished people remain living in makeshift shelters and tents, still waiting for help. The government says it has planted 400 tons of beans, donated 300,000 baskets of basic goods and given $100 each to vulnerable people. But UNICEF warned last week that more than 250,000 children still have no access to adequate schools and that the majority of 1,250 schools destroyed or damaged have not been rebuilt. It said a lack of funds and violence have delayed reconstruction.

The road to becoming the first undisputed world heavyweight champion since 2000 is clear once again. Oleksandr Usyk retained the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO belts after beating Anthony Joshua on Saturday and Tyson Fury has the WBC title for the time being at least. They both want to fight each other so it just needs to get arranged. Fury says he is currently retired and that “it's not going to be cheap” to get him back in the ring. Usyk-Fury would be one of the biggest fights in a generation and has the added intrigue that both boxers are undefeated. Usyk was also undisputed cruiserweight champion from 2018-19.

The Israeli spyware maker NSO says its chief executive has stepped down as the company prepares to reorganize. In a statement Sunday, NSO said that CEO Shalev Hulio, one of the company’s founders, would be stepping down. NSO has been connected to a number of scandals resulting from alleged misuse by customers of its flagship Pegasus phone surveillance software. Last year, the U.S. blacklisted the company, saying its tools had been used to “conduct transnational repression.” The company also plans to cut about 100 people, or 13% of its work force.

First lady Jill Biden has tested negative for the virus and will leave South Carolina, where she's been isolated since vacationing with President Joe Biden. Her office says the 71-year-old first lady will rejoin the president at their Delaware beach home later Sunday. Like her husband, Jill Biden has been twice-vaccinated and twice-boosted with the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. The White House announced on Tuesday that she had tested positive for the coronavirus. The president himself recovered from a rebound case of the virus on Aug. 7. The first lady's office says Jill Biden was prescribed the antiviral drug Paxlovid and isolated at the Kiawah Island vacation home for five days before receiving negative results from two consecutive COVID-19 tests.

Prosecutors in Brooklyn are for the first time retrying a long-ago case they won with the help of a former homicide detective whose work has been questioned. Nearly 20 people have had decades-old convictions for murder and other crimes tossed out after accusing former Detective Louis Scarcella of framing them. Prosecutors agreed with most of those dismissals but stood by other convictions. This new retrial illustrates the tricky line the Brooklyn district attorney's office has been walking through a decade of doubts about the work of a onetime star homicide detective. Scarcella denies any wrongdoing.

There's no dispute about some of the evidence in the trial of two men accused of wanting to kidnap Michigan’s governor. Barry Croft Jr. and Adam Fox enjoy getting high. The jury repeatedly has heard about their marijuana use, mostly from the defense. Fox and Croft are charged with conspiring to abduct Gretchen Whitmer as part of an anti-government uprising in 2020. But defense lawyers say the two men were “big talkers” who sometimes said outrageous things when they had been smoking pot. Defense attorney Joshua Blanchard says Croft was “frankly high on marijuana all the time.” Fox’s attorney has also referred to marijuana when questioning witnesses. The government isn't making much of their drug use. Prosecutors say the men were dangerous extremists.

When the U.S. Supreme Court toppled the constitutional right to abortion, some prosecutors in cities and counties across the country vowed to refrain from enforcing new state-imposed bans on the procedure. Such promises may be hard to keep.

When Minneapolis teachers settled a 14-day strike earlier this year, they celebrated a groundbreaking provision in their new contract that was meant to shield teachers of color from traditional seniority-based layoffs. They said it was crucial in a district where more than 60% of students are from racial minorities to have teachers that look like them. Months later, that language has ignited a firestorm, with denunciations of the policy as racist and unconstitutional discrimination against white people. One legal group is seeking to recruit teachers willing to sue to void the language. But the teachers union paints the dispute as a ginned-up controversy when there’s no imminent danger of anyone losing their job.

Queen Elizabeth II has eaten jam sandwiches every day since she was a toddler, according to her former private chef. Darren McGrady claims on his YouTube channel that the monarch favors a strawberry preserve made from fruits picked in her Balmoral Castle grounds in Scotland. He claims the 96-year old monarch is also partial to fresh strawberries, which she will eat three or four days a weeks when they are in season. But the chef says woe betides anyone who tries to give her out-of-season berries. The Palace would not comment on the queen’s sandwich preferences.
