LOS ANGELES — One candidate wants to make the Los Angeles Police Department larger than it has ever been. Another envisions a future where America's second largest city no longer needs police. The others have staked out middle ground.

The actions of a school district police chief and other law enforcement officers moved swiftly to the center of the investigation into this week’s shocking school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Authorities acknowledged Friday that children and teachers repeatedly begged 911 operators for help while the police chief told more than a dozen officers to wait in a hallway at Robb Elementary School. The delay in confronting the shooter — who was inside the school for more than an hour — could lead to discipline, lawsuits and even criminal charges against police.

Albania says four Albanian women and nine children, all related to Albanians fighters who joined Islamist extremist groups in Syria and Iraq, have been repatriated from a Syrian camp. The group, which landed at an airport in neighboring Kosovo, was joined by other Kosovar citizens leaving the camps in Syria. The statement on Saturday did not disclose how many Kosovars were repatriated. Albanian Interior Minister Bledi Cuci thanked U.S. authorities and Lebanese Gen. Abass Ibrahim, who has played a key role in the repatriating efforts. Forty-three people from Albania and at least 121 from Kosovo have been repatriated since 2018.

Sergio Perez showed that Red Bull has the speed to compete with Ferrari. He beat Charles Leclerc in the final practice session of the Monaco Grand Prix ahead of qualifying to set the field for Sunday's race. Third practice is usually not exciting but fans swarming around the street circuit were treated to a fine duel in bright sunshine. Perez jostled with Leclerc for the top spot. He edged him out in the closing stages by just .041 seconds. Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz Jr. followed in third place ahead of championship leader Max Verstappen for Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton placed seventh and Mercedes teammate George Russell was ninth.

Russia has claimed the capture of a key railway junction as its forces fight to seize all of eastern Ukraine's contested Donbas region. A Russian Defense ministry spokesman reported Saturday said the city of Lyman had been “completely liberated” by a joint force of Russian soldiers and Moscow-backed separatists. The city is the second small municipality to fall to Russian forces this week. Controlling Lyman would give the Russian military a foothold for advancing on larger Ukrainian-held cities in Donetsk and Luhansk, the two provinces that make up the Donbas. Since failing to occupy Ukraine’s capital, Russia has concentrated on seizing parts of the region not already controlled by the separatists.

Cardinal Angelo Sodano, a once-powerful Italian prelate who long served as the Vatican's No. 2 official, has died. He was 94. Pope Francis in a condolence telegram Saturday to the retired prelate's sister noted that Sodano had held many roles in the Vatican's diplomatic corps, culminating in his being named secretary of state in 1991 by the then-pontiff, John Paul II. The Vatican in announcing the death on Friday, didn't cite a cause, but Italian state radio said that Sodano recently contracted COVID-19, complicating his already frail health. Corriere della Sera said he died in a Rome clinic. Sodano's legacy was tarnished by his staunch support for the disgraced, pedophile founder of the Legion of Christ religious order.

Breanna Stewart scored 13 of her 29 points after the third quarter, Jewell Loyd finished with 21 points and the Seattle Storm gave up a 16-point second-half lead before beating the New York Liberty 79-71 in overtime. Stewart made 6 of 8 from the free-throw line in the final 2 minutes of the fourth quarter and then hit a 3-pointer to give Seattle (4-3) the lead for good at 70-67 just 35 seconds into overtime. Natasha Howard led New York (1-6) with 17 points and nine rebounds. Sue Bird, Ezi Magbegor and Stephanie Talbot missed the game due to health and safety protocols.

When the jury in Johnny Depp's libel suit against ex-wife Amber Heard resumes deliberations after the Memorial Day weekend, its focus will be on issues much removed from the public debate that has engulfed the proceedings. For six weeks, testimony focused on details of alleged abuse that Heard suffered. Public debate also focused on whether Heard is telling the truth about what she experienced. But the jury has been tasked not with determining who was abused, but whether Heard defamed Depp when she wrote a newspaper piece about domestic violence. Depp says he was defamed, even though the article doesn't mention him. The jury verdict form spells out multiple hurdles Depp must clear to prevail.

The last of the victims of a gunman’s racist attack on a Buffalo supermarket will be laid to rest Saturday. At 86, Ruth Whitfield was the oldest of the 10 people killed. Civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton is expected to deliver her eulogy at a service attended by Vice President Kamala Harris. Whitfield was inside the Tops Friendly Market after visiting her husband of 68 years in a nursing home when an 18-year-old gunman opened fire May 14. He is charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bail.

Seaside communities in New England are providing free beach access to Native Americans as the summer season kicks off this Memorial Day weekend. Officials in Narragansett, Rhode Island, are offering free seasonal beach passes to anyone with a valid identification card from the Narragansett Indian tribe. The Massachusetts town of Truro is also extending a similar benefit to any Native American with proof of tribal affiliation. Eastham, another Massachusetts town on Cape Cod, extended beach rights to indigenous people in 2020. The chairman of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe on Cape Cod says the “symbolic steps” recognize the importance of the ocean to tribal heritage.

A Cape Cod science center and one of the world’s largest shipping businesses are collaborating on a project to use robotic buoys to protect a vanishing whale from lethal collisions with ships. A lab at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution developed the technology, which uses buoys and underwater gliders to record whale sounds in near real time. The robotic recorders can give scientists, mariners and the public an idea of the location of rare North Atlantic right whales. Now, French shipping giant CMA CGM is working with Woods Hole to deploy two of the robotic buoys off of Norfolk, Virginia, and Savannah, Georgia.

The U.S. energy secretary and Danish wind developer Orsted say they want American union workers to build offshore wind farms to dot the U.S. coastlines — the building trades workers who could otherwise be left out of a transition to renewable resources. A majority of onshore wind and solar farms have been built either with non-union workers or without collective bargaining agreements, except for in California, according to North America’s Building Trades Unions. Orsted signed a project labor agreement this month with the national union representing 3 million people in the building trades to construct the company’s U.S. offshore wind farms with an American union workforce.

A scientific analysis commissioned by the FBI shortly before agents went digging for buried treasure suggests that a huge quantity of gold was below the surface of a rural site in western Pennsylvania. That's according to newly released government documents and photos that deepen the mystery of the 2018 dig at Dent's Run. The report was authored by a geophysicist who performed testing at the site. The government has long claimed its excavation did not yield any of the Civil War-era gold that legend says was buried there. The newly revealed geophysical survey was part of a court-ordered release of government records on the FBI’s treasure hunt.

Irina-Camelia Begu has reached the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in six years. She got there at Roland Garros one match after being fined $10,000 for tossing her racket and having it brush a child in the stands. The 63rd-ranked Romanian advanced by beating 227th-ranked French wild-card entry Leolia Jeanjean 6-1, 6-4. Begu is 31 and participating in her 41st major tournament. Her best showings previously were fourth-round runs at the 2015 Australian Open and the 2016 French Open. Jeanjean was appearing in her first tour-level event and beat former No. 1 Karolina Pliskova in the second round.

Authorities say three people were shot and wounded on Friday in a neighborhood west of Chicago. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that police say a man was sitting in a parked car with a woman standing by his driver side window when both were struck with gunfire at about 10:15 p.m. in South Austin. Police say the 34-year-old man was shot twice in the neck and taken to the hospital in critical condition while the 31-year-old woman was shot in the elbow and in good condition. Authorities say a third person was also struck by gunfire and is in good condition. No additional details about the shooting were immediately made available.

Europe’s frantic search for alternatives to Russian natural gas has dramatically increased the demand — and price — for Norway's oil and gas. As the money pours in, Europe’s second-biggest natural gas supplier is fending off accusations that it’s profiting from the war in Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki urged the Scandinavian nation to use its  “gigantic” oil and gas profits to support the hardest-hit countries, mainly Ukraine. The comments have touched a nerve, even as some Norwegians wonder whether they’re doing enough to combat Russia’s war by increasing economic aid to Ukraine and helping neighboring countries end their dependence on Russian energy.

The price is 2.5 billion pounds ($3.2 billion) — the highest ever for a sports team. Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reports that police lobbed canisters of tear gas and fired in the air to disperse people gathered near the site of a collapsed 10-story building that left 28 people dead. The report said people insisted on entering the site in the southwestern city of Abadan on Friday night and the gathering turned into a riot. Police then dispersed people from the area. It said in other cities people gathered peacefully to mourn. A video posted online showed a security officer in Abadan yelling “go back” while pointing his weapon directly at a group of people and firing. It was unclear whether anyone was hurt.

U.N. experts say in a new report that Libya faces a serious security threat from foreign fighters and private military companies, especially Russia’s Wagner Group which has violated international law. The experts also accused seven Libyan armed groups of systematically using unlawful detention to punish perceived opponents, ignoring international and domestic civil rights laws, including laws prohibiting torture. The panel of experts says: “Migrants have been extremely vulnerable to human rights abuses and regularly subjected to acts of slavery, rape and torture.” The oil-rich North African nation plunged into turmoil after a NATO-backed uprising in 2011 toppled dictator Moammar Gadhafi, who was later killed. The report was obtained late Friday by The Associated Press.

Australia and the United States are closely watching the 10-day trip by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. They fear that China could be laying the groundwork for an eventual military presence in the region. China says its development of ties with Pacific Island nations doesn’t pose a threat to others.
